Lawn Tips

FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN
Spring is the best time of year to fertilize your lawn because you want the soil temperature hits about 55º Fahrenheit. When shopping for fertilizer, a 20-5-10 lawn fertilizer is a good basic mix to start with. Make sure you read and follow the label instructions.

WEED CONTROL
Weed control is more than just handpicking weeds. Weeds can take over quickly so don’t wait to weed until they are out of control. Commit to a quick walk across your yard every other day or so and pluck the weeds that stand out. Select a foliar herbicide that can kill weeds and use it according to the directions.

MOWING PRACTICES
The biggest highlights in lawn mowing are that you should never cut your grass too short and you should mow when your grass is dry.

WATERING ROUTINE
A thoughtful watering schedule is crucial to a healthy lawn. In Texas, you will want to water your grass early in the morning before 10 am. This eliminates as much evaporation as possible and keeps everything cool during the hottest part of the day, causing less overall stress on your lawn.

Monthly Recipe

Patriotic Party Mix

Ingredients:
4 cups Chex cereal
3 cups Cheerios
2 cups pretzels snaps
1 and 1/2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1 (16 ounce) package candiquik candy coating or 1 (20 ounce) package vanilla almond bark
2 (1.7 ounce) containers red, white and blue sprinkles
1 cup regular red, white and blue M&M’s
1 cup peanut red, white and blue M&M’s

Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine the Chex cereal, Cheerios, pretzels and peanuts.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the almond bark or candy coating according to package directions, usually 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until melted and smooth. Be sure not to over melt the almond bark as it will burn and become too thick to stir and coat the mix evenly.

Pour the melted almond bark over the ingredients in the large bowl and toss to coat with a large spoon.  Ingredients should be evenly coated in the almond bark.

Spread the mixture out in an even layer on parchment paper. Immediately sprinkle with the sprinkles and then the M&M’s. Allow mixture to cool completely. Break apart to serve. Store in an airtight container or baggie.
